Butte College has hired Tray Robinson as its new Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-Racism Officer, with more than 25 years of experience in higher education.
Robinson moved to Chico from Compton, California to attend college. He completed a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and bilingual Spanish, and later his master’s degree in human relations, both from Chico State. Post-graduation, Robinson served at Chico State as a hall director, EOP advisor, admissions counselor, director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, lecturer in multicultural and gender studies and chief diversity officer. His professional roles at the university included acting as a liaison and vital resource between the university and underserved communities.
Citing the influential role his mentors have played in his life and career path, he said “my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Frank, had a huge impact on my education. I knew by junior high that I was going to move from Compton and attend college. I was going to use sports and/or music as a vehicle to help facilitate the process. I lost too many friends to gang violence and wanted to be a role model for my nieces and nephews and earn a college degree.”
In his role at Butte College, Robinson’s sensitivity, and commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of a diverse community college population will aid in creating transformative change within the complex community college setting.
